An expired NCT is common and fixable, but every day you drive on it is an offence. Here is the order to do things in.
What the offence costs
Using a car without a valid test certificate carries a fixed charge of €60 and 3 penalty points if paid within 28 days. The charge rises to €90 for the next 28 days. After 56 days it goes to court, where the penalty is 5 points and a higher fine, though you can pay €120 and take the 3 points up to seven days before the court date. Points stay on your licence for three years; 12 points in three years is a six-month disqualification, 7 for learner and novice drivers.
Can I drive to the test?
There is no written exemption in the Road Traffic Act, but Gardaí have said publicly that a driver who can show a scheduled test date will have that taken into consideration, and NCTS advises carrying the confirmation email. Driving directly to a pre-booked test is treated as acceptable in practice. Driving for anything else on an expired certificate is the offence above, and the car can be seized.
Insurance
Insurance Ireland has said its members keep cover in place where the owner has made every effort to book and the car is kept roadworthy, and insurers such as Zurich say the same on their own sites. The condition that matters is roadworthiness: if a defect the test would have caught contributes to a crash, the insurer can dispute the claim. Keep the booking confirmation and read your own policy wording.
Getting a date when the calendar is full
- Book the earliest date you can see at any centre now, even if it is months out. It holds your place and you can move it for free until five working days before.
- Add the car to the priority list during booking. NCTS aims to find a slot within 28 days.
- Look at neighbouring centres. Waits differ by months between centres a short drive apart. The centres page on this site shows all 50 by next available date.
- Watch for cancellations. nctalerts.ie checks your chosen centres every minute and emails you a booking link when a date before your deadline appears. Move your booking to it on ncts.ie; the old slot is released.
After you pass
Because the certificate was already expired, the new one runs from the day you pass and is dated to the next anniversary of first registration, so you do not lose time on it. Put the new disc in the windscreen the same day.

Is there a grace period after the NCT expires?
No. The offence applies from the day after expiry. In practice enforcement is at the roadside and through cameras reading the disc, so the risk is real but not automatic.
Can I tax the car with an expired NCT?
Yes. Motor tax does not check the NCT. The two are separate systems.
My car was off the road for months. Why can I not book online?
NCTS asks owners of cars off the road or untaxed for more than three months to ring 01 413 5992 so the car can be put back into the schedule.
Does an expired NCT affect selling the car?
A buyer will usually want a fresh certificate and the price reflects that. Trade buyers often want 6 months or more left.
