An expired NCT is common and fixable, but every day you drive on it is an offence. Here is the order to do things in.
What the offence costs
Using a car without a valid test certificate carries a fixed charge of €60 and 3 penalty points if paid within 28 days. The charge rises to €90 for the next 28 days. After 56 days it goes to court, where the penalty is 5 points and a higher fine, though you can pay €120 and take the 3 points up to seven days before the court date. Points stay on your licence for three years; 12 points in three years is a six-month disqualification, 7 for learner and novice drivers.
Can I drive to the test?
Neither NCTS nor Citizens Information lists an exemption for driving to a booked test. Using the car without a valid certificate is the offence above, whatever the reason for the trip. If you drive to the test anyway, carry the booking confirmation so you can show a Garda the date, and keep the trip direct. A car with a dangerous fail must not be driven at all.
Insurance
Insurance Ireland has said its members keep cover in place where the owner has made every effort to book and the car is kept roadworthy, and insurers such as Zurich say the same on their own sites. The condition that matters is roadworthiness: if a defect the test would have caught contributes to a crash, the insurer can dispute the claim. Keep the booking confirmation and read your own policy wording.
Getting a date when the calendar is full
- Book the earliest date you can see at any centre now, even if it is months out. It holds your place and you can move it for free until five working days before.
- Add the car to the priority list during booking. NCTS aims to find a slot within 28 days.
- Look at neighbouring centres. Waits differ by months between centres a short drive apart. The centres page on this site shows all 50 by waiting time.
- Watch for cancellations. nctalerts.ie watches your chosen centres and alerts you within a minute when a date before your deadline appears. Move your booking to it on ncts.ie; the old slot is released.
After you pass
A late test does not reset the clock. NCTS issues the certificate from the day the car passes until the next test due date, which stays on the anniversary of first registration. So the months after expiry are lost: a car over ten years old that was due on 1 March and passes on 1 June gets a certificate to 1 March the next year, nine months, not twelve. The fee is for the test, not for the length of the certificate. Put the new disc in the windscreen the same day.

Is there a grace period after the NCT expires?
No. The offence applies from the day after expiry. In practice enforcement is at the roadside and through cameras reading the disc, so the risk is real but not automatic.
Can I tax the car with an expired NCT?
Yes. Motor tax does not check the NCT. The two are separate systems.
My car was off the road for months. Why can I not book online?
NCTS asks owners of cars off the road or untaxed for more than three months to ring 01 413 5992 so the car can be put back into the schedule.
Does an expired NCT affect selling the car?
A buyer will usually want a fresh certificate and the price reflects that. Trade buyers often want 6 months or more left.
