When the phone beats the website
- The car has been off the road or untaxed for more than three months. NCTS says the owner has to contact them directly to be put back in the system.
- You sold the car after paying for a test. Ring before the date or you lose the fee or get a no-show charge.
- You need a visual re-test and want to know when the centre is open, including lunch and shift-change closures.
- The website shows nothing at all for your car, or the due date it shows is wrong.
- You have no debit or credit card. The online booking needs one; NCTS gives the phone line as the alternative.
When the website is quicker
Booking, moving and cancelling appointments is faster online. You sign in with the registration plus either the Booking ID from your letter or the date of first registration. Payment is taken when the booking is confirmed. Checking your due date needs nothing but the registration; the free check on this site gives the same answer.
The call centre cannot see more appointments than the website shows. Both draw on the same calendar. If you need an earlier date, the options are the priority list (NCTS aims for 28 days), a different centre, or watching for cancellations. nctalerts.ie does the watching: pick up to five centres and you get an email or push within a minute of a date before your deadline appearing.
