The NCT itself takes between 40 minutes and an hour, according to Citizens Information, for about 60 checks done by computer and by hand. Add the time to check in and the result at the end. The longer wait is usually for a date, which can be days or months depending on the centre.
On the day
- Arrive 10 minutes early. NCTS says if you are late you may have to re-book for another day and pay the €24 late fee.
- Queue: the NCTS customer charter aims to start your test within 15 minutes of your appointment time. If the wait to start is over 65 minutes, the charter promises a free test.
- The test: 40 to 60 minutes. You wait in the centre while the car goes through the lane.
- The result: you get the Vehicle Inspection Report at the end. If the car passes you can choose to have it emailed instead of printed. If it fails, you get the printed report so the inspector can explain what needs fixing.
Come prepared and it goes faster: an empty boot, the glove box unlocked for the OBD scan, hubcaps off where they hide the wheel nuts, the engine warm. NCTS says it may be unable to test a car that is not ready. The full list is in our guide on what to bring to the NCT.
How long you wait for a date
The customer charter aims for an average lead time of 15 days or less at each centre, and NCTS publishes the current lead time per centre on its booking lead time statistics page. In practice it varies a lot. NCTS says the dates shown online are about a third of what a centre will run; the other two thirds are released around two weeks ahead, once staff rosters are set. If nothing suits, join the priority list during booking and NCTS aims to find you a slot within 28 days.
Our centres page shows the waiting time at all 50 centres, updated through the day, so you can see which centre near you is quickest. Centres a short drive apart can differ by weeks.
Re-tests are quicker
NCTS says re-test lead time is usually under three days, and the charter aims for an average of 10 days at each centre. Visual re-tests (a wiper, a bulb, a number plate) need no appointment and are free. Book a lane re-test within 21 days and have it done within 30 days of the failed test.
Getting an earlier date
Cancellations come back onto the ncts.ie calendar all day and go to whoever sees them first. nctalerts.ie watches up to five centres and emails you within a minute when a date before your deadline appears; you then book it yourself on ncts.ie. €9.99 for 7 days, with an automatic refund if you get fewer than 3 alerts.
