When the ncts.ie booking calendar has no suitable date at your test centre, NCTS offers a priority list. According to the NCTS FAQ, NCTS endeavours to find you an appointment within 28 days. Joining is free, and you can do it online during booking or by ringing 01 413 5992.
How to join the NCT priority list
- Open the booking page on ncts.ie, enter your registration, and sign in with the date of first registration or your Booking ID.
- Select your preferred test centre and look at the calendar.
- Choose the option to add your vehicle to the priority list on the booking screen (or call 01 413 5992, Monday to Thursday 8am to 8pm, Friday 8am to 6pm).
- NCTS contacts you with a proposed date and time once a slot is assigned.
What NCTS promises, and what it does not
The NCTS FAQ states two key facts about how appointments are released. First, the appointments visible online at any moment represent roughly one third of the actual tests a centre will run; the remaining two thirds are opened about two weeks ahead when staff schedules are finalised. Second, for customers on the priority list, NCTS aims to provide an appointment within 28 days.
Under the NCTS Customer Charter, if NCTS cannot offer an appointment within a 28-day period, the test is provided free of charge, unless one of six exclusions applies:
- Your test is already more than 7 days overdue when you contact NCTS.
- An appointment was offered 7 days or more before your test due date.
- You made specific requests about suitable days, times or dates.
- You declined or rearranged two or more appointments.
- You failed to attend a previous appointment.
- You previously accepted or requested an appointment outside the 28-day period.
Priority list vs watching for cancellations
The priority list is useful if you have weeks to spare and can take whatever day and hour NCTS assigns you. Its limits are practical: you wait for NCTS to allocate a slot, you cannot pick the days or times that fit your work week without losing the charter guarantee, and if your NCT is already more than 7 days overdue the charter guarantee does not apply.
Cancelled appointments and newly released two-week rosters do not go to a private queue alone: they appear on the live ncts.ie booking calendar throughout the day and are taken within minutes by whoever is looking. €9.99 covers 7 days and up to five centres, one payment, and fewer than 3 alerts in the week means an automatic refund. You can stay on the NCTS priority list or keep a far-off booking while nctalerts.ie watches up to five centres for an earlier date that actually suits you.
Frequently asked
How long does the NCT priority list take?
NCTS says on its FAQ that it endeavours to get you an appointment within 28 days when you place your vehicle on the priority list.
Where is the priority list option on ncts.ie?
It appears during the booking flow on ncts.ie after you enter your registration and view your chosen test centre, or you can ask to be added by calling 01 413 5992.
Can I choose my time on the priority list?
NCTS says it will do its best to accommodate you, but under the Customer Charter making specific requests about suitable days, times or dates excludes you from the free-test guarantee if no slot is offered within 28 days.
Can I use cancellation alerts if I already have a booking or am on the priority list?
Yes. Once an alert notifies you of an earlier date on ncts.ie, you sign in with your registration and Booking ID and move your appointment. Changing a confirmed booking with at least five working days' notice is free.
