If the first date ncts.ie offers you is months away, you have three real options: the priority list, another centre, or a cancellation. Most people end up using a cancellation, because that is where the near-term dates come from.
Why the calendar looks worse than it is
NCTS says on its own FAQ that the appointments shown online are roughly a third of what a centre will actually run. The remaining two thirds are released about two weeks ahead, once staff rosters are final. So a centre showing nothing for three months can still put out dozens of slots for the week after next. Those slots, and every cancellation, land on the same public calendar and go to whoever is looking at that moment.
Where cancellations come from
- Moving a booking is free with five or more working days' notice, so people move freely until then.
- Inside five working days a change or cancellation costs €24, but people still cancel: cars get sold, repairs run late, plans change.
- Re-tests are booked into their own short calendar and often released back when the car is fixed early.
A released slot is visible to every car with a test due, at every centre, the second it is freed. It rarely lasts ten minutes at a Dublin or Cork centre.
The priority list
During booking, ncts.ie offers to put your car on a priority list for your chosen centre. NCTS says it aims to find you a slot within 28 days. You are then rung or emailed with a date, which you can accept or decline. It costs nothing and it is worth doing, but it is not fast, and you have no say over the day or time offered.
Another centre
Any centre in Ireland can test your car and the result is identical. Waiting times differ by months between centres a half hour apart, especially around Dublin, Cork and Galway. Our centres page lists all 50 by next available date; the county pages show what is just over the county line.
Catching a cancellation yourself
- Sign in on ncts.ie with your registration and go to the booking calendar for the centre you want.
- Refresh. Early morning and early evening tend to be busiest for changes, but slots appear at any hour.
- When a date you like appears, book it at once; there is no hold.
- If you already have a booking, you can change to the new date on the same screen. The old slot is released for the next person.

Check the 90-day rule first
An earlier test only makes sense inside the 90 days before your due date. Test earlier than that and it counts as voluntary: the new certificate runs from the day you pass, not from your old due date. The free due-date check on this site shows the day your window opens.

How often do NCT cancellations come up?
Constantly at busy centres. Every free change more than five working days out, every late cancellation and every early-finished re-test frees a slot. At Dublin centres it is normal to see several a day; small rural centres see fewer, but the queue there is shorter too.
Does NCTS have a cancellation list?
Not a list you can join for cancellations. The priority list is the closest thing: NCTS tries to place you within 28 days but chooses the slot. Cancelled slots simply go back on the public calendar.
Is there a fee for taking a cancellation?
No. You pay the normal test fee of €60. If you are moving an existing booking with five or more working days' notice, the move is free.
Can I book a cancellation at a different centre?
Yes. Any centre can test your car. Watching two or three centres within driving distance is the fastest way to an earlier date.
